Plenary 1 "Accelerating Sustainability Transitions: What is Needed Now and in the Future? "

This session invites high-level experts and practitioners to share what they view as the top priorities required for progress on climate change, biodiversity, circular economy, and the SDGs more broadly, in 2023. The panellists will be asked to highlight how their priorities can pave the way for more lasting improvements to socioeconomic systems and a sustainable future.

Plenary 2 ”Implementing Solutions to Climate, Biodiversity, and Circular Economy: Entry Points and Enabling Reforms"

Based on discussions in Plenary 1, this session will feature an interactive dialogue between IGES research leaders on entry points or concrete solutions to climate change, biodiversity loss, challenges in mainstreaming circular economy and the SDGs more broadly. Panellists will explore the potential and limitations of enabling reforms that could help spread and strengthen the implementation of key solutions, such as integration, inclusion and localisation.

Parallel Session1 "IGES 1.5°C Roadmap: Action Plans for Accelerating Transformative Change"

The world has entered an era of global boiling, and various stakeholders have begun to recognise the importance of achieving the global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Based on the 1.5°C Roadmap to be developed by IGES, this session will discuss the following questions: "Is it possible to achieve emission reductions in Japan that is consistent with the 1.5°C target?", "Is it possible to achieve ambitious emission reductions and achieve a prosperous society at the same time?", and "What actions are needed?"

Parallel Session2 "Mainstreaming CES in the Post-2030 Agenda for Enhancing Integrated Actions on Climate and Sustainability Goals: Towards Bridging Local-to-Global Feedback Loops"

In the recent years, the Circulating and Ecological Sphere ‘CES’ emerges as an integrated approach for localization of climate and sustainable development actions, as it directs localities toward effectively utilizing the locally available resources for realizing a self-reliant and decentralized society. In that context, this session will provide a common platform to bring together diverse stakeholders including, research experts and policy makers, from different parts of Asia, to deliberate on the feasibility and potential of advancing CES in accelerating climate and sustainability actions in an integrated manner, while uncovering the implementation barriers.

Parallel Session3 "Climate Security in Asia-Pacific: Key issues and challenges"

As the climate crisis exacerbates, the nexus between security and climate is attracting both policy and scholarly attention. With such and other issue areas, climate security is a highly complex area of investigation, and policymakers need to be equipped with a better mapping of the area and a compass for decision-making. This session introduces IGES’ new initiative on climate security and explores the necessary interventions in this dynamic policy area. This session focuses on climate security in the Asia-Pacific region and relevant issues related to it.

Parallel Session5 "India's Efforts to Improve Air Pollution, Japan's Cooperation and Future Direction"

The Kansai Research Centre (KRC) of IGES, with the support of the Ministry of Environment of Japan, launched the Japan-India Technology Matchmaking Platform (JITMAP) jointly with the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) of India in 2016 to promote the transfer of Japanese environmental technologies and to help Indian industry reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and environmental issues. In this session, key stakeholders from Japan and India who are working in the field of air pollution in India will be invited to introduce India's air pollution countermeasures and Japan's cooperative activities, and discuss the future of possible Japan-India cooperation in this field.

Parallel Session6 "The IPBES Assessment on Invasive Alien Species: Implications for Asia"

A panel discussion with experts of the Thematic Assessment Report on Invasive Alien Species and their Control of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Thematic Assessment Report on Invasive Alien Species and their Control of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). At IPBES-10 in Bonn in August/September this year, member States of the IPBES Plenary adopted the assessment report summary for policymakers and accepted the chapters of the report. Experts taking part in the assessment will explain the conclusions of the report, and policymakers will make a comment on how they plan to translate this information into policy.

Closing Session "Reflecting on ISAP with the Younger Generation: Prospects for the Next 50 Years"
This session reflects on the topics discussed in the Plenary and Parallel Sessions and envisions future prospects with the youth speakers. How can we shape our future when various environmental indicators nowadays demonstrate high barriers to the sustainable development? The speakers will consider the options that enable us to adopt a sustainable path that does not exceed the planetary boundaries, and look ahead to the next 50 years with a hope.
